This is a Twin Turbo CAT C13 diesel engine that came apart at my work last week. The driver was going down the 401 when he heard a rattle from under the hood. it gradually got worse and ended with a bang and him being towed into the shop. Here are some pics of the aftermath!

One of these things is not like the others.... :confused2:

check out the new addition to the middle of the piston!

so incase your wondering where the other 2 valve heads went... they went through the exhaust manifold and destroyed BOTH turbos 8-) so after a new head, new piston and liner, 2 turbos, fluids, and labor... well, needless to say, the bill for this job would've been pretty scary had it not been covered under warranty!

thought id share this you guys hehe

were you able to discover the root cause of this catastrophic failure and what kind of warranty is on one of those mills?

the vavle spring retainers either broke or fell out... there were a few pieces scattered around the top end of the head but most likely fell through the holes. as far as warranty goes, it all depends what was purchased when the truck bought but a basic warranty is somewhere around 3years 383000km. seems like a lot of mileage right? keep in mind its no big deal for trucks to put over 200000km on per year! there are fleets out there with 2006 model year trucks running with over a million km.

it was a Laidlaw company truck. Laidlaw is part owner of the Peterbilt Ontario group (the shop im at is one of many...) so they have some pretty amazing warranty coverage heh. and since this job was warrannty, it only got what it needed. otherwise it likely wouldve been a complete inframe.

"Hmmmm, my motor sounds like a can of spoons, but it's still running. Autobots, roll out!"

-15 minutes later-

"Hmmmm, now my motor sounds like 2 cans of spoons, and it's running like a dead cat. Autobots, call CAA."

caa, yeah right! if im feeling lazy and my truck has a flat tire and i call them to come out to change it for me, they wont. i will need to call a licensed mechanic to change the wheel for me.

anyone care to guess why they wont/cant change it? no cheating and calling them to find out!

other then because you live in dueling bango territory? (AKA. middle of nowhere)
;)

and good to see some owner operator didn't have to foot the bill on the motor.
